Summer holidays don’t come without their nutritional challenges. Those six week holidays don’t just feel long, they are long. After the second week, kids soon become bored without some form of structure or plans for their days and, soon enough, screen time and playing video games can soon become repetitive.
This boredom soon leads to the constant cries of “I’m hungry” and, after a few days of never-ending snacks, you’ve exhausted all options. Coming up with fun, healthy and tasty snack ideas can be tricky, so here are some quick and easy summer holiday snack ideas for kids.

Hummus and Crudite Snack Pots
This is a really fun and convenient snack to make for young kids and can be made in no time at all. To make these, get some brightly coloured or patterned paper cups and put some hummus in the bottom (you can make your own, or just use shop-bought) and then stick in some thin sticks of carrot, pepper, cucumber or celery and chunks of tomatoes and radish, baby corn cobs and sugar snap peas.
Because this is served in a handy paper cup, kids can keep hold of it easily and because of the fresh colours of the vegetables, will likely be more willing to try different things. To make a sweet version, you could do the same with peanut butter, but with slices of apple and banana.
Face Biscuits
Kids won’t want to eat healthily all the time, so it’s important to offer alternatives as well every now and then so that they don’t feel as though they are missing out. These biscuits are a great way to encourage children’s creative side and, as you use a pre-made biscuit selection, there’s very little mess involved.
Simply get a selection of biscuits, in different shapes and sizes and put a few different ones on a plate. Then, using writing icing, sprinkles and sweets, such as strawberry laces and teeth and lip sweets, get your children to make different face biscuits – they can even get more creative and create monster faces! Instead of biscuits, you could even use a selection of bakery products, such as cupcakes or loaf cakes.
Make Your Own Snack Mix
Pre-made snack mixes can often be high in sugar and have little to no nutritional value. Making your own snack mixes is a fun and easy way to make a snack that your kids will actually enjoy and can be done in little to no time at all. If your kids like different things, then you can give them their own lunch boxes to put their snack mix into – which saves all the quabbaling!
To make, get a few different bowls and fill with things such as popcorn, dried fruits, pretzels, toasted corn, yogurt coated berries, raisins, dried banana chips, marshmallows and dry cereal. This is a good way to use up any small bits of leftovers in the cupboard and you can control the portions that your little ones put into their mix.
Fruit Kebabs
Perfect for those warm summer days, fruit kebabs and other fruit snack ideas are an easy and refreshing snack for kids. To make, simply chop up tasty fruits, such as strawberries, grapes, banana, apple, watermelon, blackberries, kiwi, pineapple and raspberries and put onto bamboo skewers, or for a more young child friendly option, chopsticks or straws work well too. You can then serve as is, or provide with dips such as yogurt or peanut butter, or even dip some fruits into chocolate before assembling.
